South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) has unveiled a groundbreaking development in the energy sector by announcing the world’s first clean hydrogen power generation bidding market. The Korea Power Exchange, a body under MOTIE, revealed that a power plant secured the winning bid by offering to generate 750 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of clean electricity annually. This bid was chosen from among six power plants that took part in the auction, collectively proposing to produce 6,172 GWh. The selected power plant plans to produce electricity using clean fuel that complies with Korea’s stringent clean hydrogen certification standard, ensuring that greenhouse gas emissions are maintained at 4 kilograms of CO2 equivalent or lower per kilogram of hydrogen. The commercial operations of this clean hydrogen power plant are scheduled to commence in 2028, and the electricity generated will be available for auction for a period of up to 15 years following the start of commercial operations. This initiative signifies a significant stride towards promoting sustainable energy practices, reducing carbon footprints, and fostering the adoption of green technologies in the power generation sector.
