Surrey County Council has unveiled its plan to introduce 34 new zero-emission buses powered by green hydrogen, representing a significant step towards cleaner and greener public transport in Surrey. With an investment exceeding £16 million, these buses offer a range of up to 600 miles on a single charge, operating smoothly and quietly while providing passengers with amenities like free Wi-Fi, charging points, and social seating. The fleet includes 23 single decker buses for immediate service and 11 double decker hydrogen fuel cell buses to be added in the upcoming winter months. These buses will serve various routes connecting key areas like Redhill, East Surrey Hospital, Gatwick Airport, Crawley, and more.
The initiative builds upon the success of the 20 hydrogen buses introduced in 2023, furthering Surrey's commitment to sustainability. Matt Furniss, the Cabinet Member for Highways, Transport, and Economic Growth, expressed enthusiasm for the environmental benefits and improved travel options the buses bring. Similarly, Ed Wills, Managing Director of Metrobus, highlighted the joint efforts of Metrobus and Surrey County Council in making zero-emissions transport a reality, emphasizing the importance of reducing emissions in the local area. The partnership aims to enhance the community's access to eco-friendly transport options, promoting sustainable travel and cleaner air for Surrey residents and visitors.
