The UK's Ministry of Defence (MOD) has completed a groundbreaking hydrogen power trial in collaboration with GeoPura to enhance its electric vehicle rollout. The trial involved introducing hydrogen technology at military bases to generate electricity for rapid charging of electric cars and vans. This initiative marked the first military application of hydrogen, marking a significant milestone in alternative energy solutions for defence. Five key MOD locations were equipped with zero-emission green hydrogen-powered generators (HPUs) from GeoPura, showcasing the potential for operational efficiency and sustainability improvements. The trial highlighted the capability of hydrogen as a key enabler in the transition to zero-emissions energy while addressing challenges posed by the expanding electric vehicle fleet. The generators provided reliable and environmentally friendly power for rapid charging infrastructure, facilitating the adoption of EVs and contributing to cleaner and more sustainable defence operations. The HPUs offered both AC and fast DC charging capabilities, aligning with operational needs and supplementing grid capacity. The successful trial, with vehicles covering 120,000 miles, demonstrated hydrogen as a reliable and sustainable alternative to meet growing electricity demands. GeoPura plans to further hydrogen use in defence sites, developing mobile systems for shorter deployments and more power-dense systems to meet diverse operational requirements in the UK and globally.
