Vauxhall Trials Hydrogen-Powered Vivaro Van in the UK
Key Ideas
- Vauxhall is trialling a hydrogen fuel-cell version of its Vivaro van in the UK, with a 249-mile range and 1,000kg payload capacity.
- The Vivaro Hydrogen can travel up to 31 miles on electricity alone and refuelling the hydrogen tank takes only about five minutes.
- Although the UK has limited hydrogen refuelling stations, Vauxhall is partnering with Ryze Hydrogen to offer on-site refuelling solutions for fleet customers.
- Vauxhall is set to launch the larger 311-mile-range Movano Hydrogen in 2024, aiming to make choosing FCEVs more appealing with convenient refuelling options.
Vauxhall is conducting trials for a hydrogen fuel-cell (FCEV) version of its Vivaro van in the UK as a precursor to the release of the Movano Hydrogen later in the year. Priced at just over £59,200, the Vivaro Hydrogen boasts a 249-mile range and a 1,000kg payload capacity, outperforming its electric counterpart. The van can travel up to 31 miles on electricity alone, and refuelling its 5kg hydrogen fuel tanks is a quick process, taking approximately five minutes.
Despite the limited presence of hydrogen refuelling stations in the UK, Vauxhall is teaming up with Ryze Hydrogen to provide on-site refuelling solutions at convenient locations for fleet customers. The EU's strong support for FCEV technology is evidenced by new regulations mandating a refuelling station every 200km on major roads. The forthcoming Movano Hydrogen, with a range of 311 miles, aims to further promote FCEVs in the market.
Collaborations in the automotive industry, such as BMW's partnership with Toyota and Hyundai's venture with Skoda, signify a growing interest in hydrogen technology. While challenges remain in infrastructure development, initiatives like those between Vauxhall and Ryze Hydrogen are crucial for enhancing the accessibility and appeal of FCEVs. As the automotive landscape transitions towards sustainable solutions, hydrogen-powered vehicles like the Vivaro and Movano are poised to play a significant role in the future of transportation.
