Viking and Fincantieri have unveiled plans to launch the world's first hydrogen-powered cruise ship, the Viking Libra, in 2026. This groundbreaking vessel will be constructed at Fincantieri's Ancona shipyard and will feature a unique hybrid propulsion system based on liquefied hydrogen and fuel cells, allowing for zero-emission operations. With a gross tonnage of approximately 54,300 tons and 499 staterooms, the Viking Libra will cater to up to 998 guests while prioritizing sustainability. Isotta Fraschini Motori, a Fincantieri subsidiary specializing in fuel cell technology, has developed a powerful propulsion system capable of producing six megawatts of power for the cruise ship. Viking's chairman and CEO, Torstein Hagen, expressed pride in the company's decision to embrace hydrogen as a truly zero-emission solution, emphasizing their dedication to eco-friendly practices. Fincantieri's CEO Pierroberto Folgiero also commended the partnership's commitment to sustainable maritime transportation and innovation, highlighting the shared vision for a more environmentally conscious cruise industry. As part of their long-term growth strategy, Viking has additional orders for river and ocean ships, solidifying their position as a leader in sustainable shipbuilding and renewable energy within the cruise industry.
