Technology group Wärtsilä has unveiled the world's first large-scale 100% hydrogen-ready engine power plant, aiming to support the net-zero power systems of the future. With the rapid growth of renewables expected globally, the need for flexible and reliable power generation solutions has become increasingly crucial. Wärtsilä's new hydrogen-ready engine power plant is designed to address this demand by offering the capability to be converted to run on 100% hydrogen while currently being able to operate on natural gas and 25 vol% hydrogen blends. The power plant, based on the Wärtsilä 31 engine platform, boasts impressive features such as synchronizing with the grid within 30 seconds, ensuring energy security through fuel flexibility, and providing optimal load following capabilities along with high part load efficiency. Wärtsilä has introduced two main products under this concept: the 31SG-H2 hydrogen-ready engine and the 31H2 pure hydrogen engine, enabling a smooth transition to hydrogen-based power generation. Having completed more than 1 million running hours and with over 1,000-MW installed capacity globally, the hydrogen-ready engine power plant has received certification from TÜV SÜD, indicating a commitment to quality and safety. The president of Wärtsilä Energy, Anders Lindberg, emphasizes the significance of this development in the energy transition, stressing the essential role of flexible and zero-carbon power generation in meeting climate goals. The availability of the 100% hydrogen-ready engine for orders in 2025 and its delivery from 2026 marks a significant step towards a more sustainable and decarbonized energy landscape.
