  • The Prime Minister highlighted hydrogen's significance for achieving climate neutrality in energy-intensive sectors like steel and chemistry, aiming for North Rhine-Westphalia to become the first climate-neutral industrial region in Europe.
  • The project demonstrates successful collaboration between authorities and companies, emphasizing the acceleration of decarbonization and promotion of low-carbon mobility in densely populated regions.
Air Liquide has recently inaugurated a 20MW PEM electrolyser plant at its Oberhausen site in Germany to supply industrial and mobility customers through an existing hydrogen pipeline. This plant, claimed to be the largest green hydrogen production facility in Germany, has a capacity of up to 2,900 tonnes of renewable hydrogen per year. The electrolyser stacks used in the plant are provided through a joint venture between Air Liquide and Siemens Energy. The site is strategically connected to Air Liquide's hydrogen pipeline to cater to customers in the chemical, steel, and mobility industries. The inauguration ceremony was attended by Hendrik Wüst, the Prime Minister of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, who emphasized hydrogen's pivotal role in achieving a climate-neutral future for energy-intensive sectors. Gilles Le Van, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Air Liquide Germany, highlighted the significance of this project in accelerating decarbonization efforts and promoting low-carbon mobility in the region. The project also received wind power supply from Statkraft, ensuring renewable hydrogen production and compliance with REDII standards. The successful collaboration between authorities and companies was lauded as a key factor in achieving climate protection milestones. Overall, the project signifies a crucial step towards establishing North Rhine-Westphalia as a leading climate-neutral industrial region in Europe.
