The U.S. Department of Energy has allocated $30 million to the Appalachian Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub (ARCH2) for producing low-carbon hydrogen through carbon capture and storage technologies. Led by Battelle, the project plans to use natural gas, biomass, and clean electricity sources in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Ohio to produce hydrogen while storing CO2 emissions underground. This initiative aims to decarbonize industrial and transportation sectors in the region. The project's development phase is expected to take up to 36 months, involving the establishment of advisory and community benefits committees to ensure transparency and engagement with the local community and labor members.
