BASF Environmental Catalyst and Metal Solutions (ECMS) has established a new laboratory in Hannover, Germany, specifically dedicated to advancing research on anode and cathode platinum group metal (PGM)-containing catalysts for water electrolysis in the green hydrogen market. The laboratory aims to leverage BASF ECMS's expertise in catalysis and precious metals to develop innovative catalysts and components. By focusing on areas such as synthesising advanced catalysts, preparing catalyst coated membranes (CCMs), and developing low-iridium catalysts, the lab seeks to address the scarcity and high cost of iridium in proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysers, ultimately making green hydrogen production more cost-effective. Moreover, the lab will conduct electrochemical testing, support customer-specific projects, and facilitate fuel cell testing to assist customers in product development. This initiative marks a significant step for BASF ECMS in building a comprehensive product portfolio that supports the entire hydrogen value chain, while also contributing to cost reduction for electrolysers and fuel cells. The new laboratory in Hannover aligns with BASF ECMS's broader commitment to the global energy transition and decarbonisation efforts.
