Colombia's Cartagena Refinery Leading Sustainable Energy Innovations
Key Ideas
  • Refinería de Cartagena SAS completed pilot testing for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production using organic feedstocks like palm and used cooking oils.
  • Ecopetrol aims for sustained SAF output from Cartagena by 2028, supporting Colombia's energy transition plan.
  • The refinery has undertaken various environmental projects, including a solar farm, carbon capture exploration, and renewable diesel production testing.
  • Efforts to reduce CO2 emissions have been successful, with a significant reduction achieved through energy efficiency improvements.
Refinería de Cartagena SAS, a subsidiary of Ecopetrol SA, has successfully completed pilot testing for the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at its refinery in Cartagena, Colombia. The testing, which lasted 7 days, utilized a mix of palm and used cooking oils to produce jet fuel with renewable components. Ecopetrol plans to undertake laboratory reviews of the pilot SAF production to ensure compliance with international standards before moving towards commercial-scale production. If approved, the Cartagena SAF project aims to achieve sustained output by 2028, using organic feedstocks like vegetable oils and UCOs. Additionally, the refinery has implemented a series of environmental initiatives, including the construction of Latin America's first solar farm inside a refinery. This solar farm is expected to significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions once fully operational. Other projects include exploring carbon capture, water neutrality, green hydrogen production, and renewable diesel testing. These efforts reflect Ecopetrol's commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. Furthermore, the refinery's focus on energy efficiency has resulted in a substantial reduction of CO2 emissions. Various improvements, such as optimizing electricity, natural gas, and thermal energy consumption, have contributed to the successful reduction of emissions. The Cartagena refinery's dedication to sustainable energy innovations positions it as a leader in environmental stewardship and supports Colombia's transition towards cleaner energy sources.
