Costain has been awarded a substantial front-end engineering and design (FEED) contract by bp to establish a new hydrogen pipeline network spanning 31km in the Teesside region of the UK. The project, part of the East Coast Cluster and known as H2Teesside (H2T), is set to become one of the largest blue hydrogen production facilities in the country, generating approximately 160,000 tonnes of low carbon hydrogen annually. This initiative by bp aims to replace natural gas consumption among industrial users, promoting the hydrogen economy and facilitating decarbonisation in the area. Costain, with its skilled engineering team, is tasked with completing the FEED project by 2025, following its successful completion of a similar project for an onshore CO2 pipeline. The company's Managing Director of Natural Resources, Sam White, highlighted the importance of this project in advancing UK decarbonisation and providing industrial users with a sustainable alternative to natural gas. Additionally, Technip Energies has been enlisted by bp to handle the FEED for the hydrogen production site, aiming to finalize the project by 2025. These developments are crucial milestones for the H2Teesside project, which could significantly contribute to decarbonising industry in Teesside, establishing it as a prominent hydrogen hub and supporting the UK's low carbon hydrogen economy growth.
