Drift Energy, a UK-based cleantech start-up, has announced plans to build a fleet of 'net positive' yachts capable of producing green hydrogen at sea by 2025. With a recent fundraise of £4.65m led by Octopus Ventures and support from Blue Action Accelerator, the company aims to design vessels that harness deep ocean wind to generate green hydrogen for decarbonizing heavy industry, transportation, and manufacturing. By utilizing underwater turbines and on-board electrolysis technology, Drift Energy plans to produce and store gigawatts of green hydrogen, leveraging Artificial Intelligence routing algorithms to optimize energy generation. The company's founder, Ben Medland, expressed gratitude for the investment that will propel the development of their first green hydrogen-producing ships. Supported by Innovate UK and praised by investors for its innovative approach, Drift Energy is set to lead in renewable energy solutions. Blue Action Accelerator, an investment platform for the 'blue economy', also backs Drift Energy's mission of creating mobile renewable energy from the seas.
