EBRD to Finance Pilot Hydrogen Generation Facility in Uzbekistan
Key Ideas
  • The EBRD will finance a pilot hydrogen generation facility in Uzbekistan to support decarbonisation of fertiliser production.
  • Up to $65m has been offered to ACWA Power UKS Green H2 for the development, design, construction, and operation of the facility.
  • The plant aims to replace grey hydrogen in ammonia fertiliser production and is expected to produce 3,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen annually.
  • The facility will help reduce CO2 emissions by around 22,000 tonnes once operational.
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has announced its financing of a pilot hydrogen generation facility in Uzbekistan to aid in the decarbonisation of fertiliser production. ACWA Power UKS Green H2 will receive up to $65 million for the development, design, construction, and operation of the facility, with $55 million being a loan from EBRD and an additional $10 million in concessional finance from Canada. The primary goal of the plant is to replace grey hydrogen currently used in ammonia fertiliser production in Uzbekistan. It is projected that the facility will generate around 3,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen on an annual basis, leading to a reduction of approximately 22,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions. This initiative aligns with the global push towards sustainable and cleaner energy sources, showcasing a positive step towards a greener future for Uzbekistan.
