EBRD to Finance Pilot Hydrogen Generation Facility in Uzbekistan
Key Ideas
  • The EBRD will finance a pilot hydrogen generation facility in Uzbekistan to support the decarbonisation of fertiliser production.
  • ACWA Power UKS Green H2 will receive up to $65m for the development, design, construction, and operation of the facility.
  • The plant aims to replace grey hydrogen in ammonia fertiliser production and is expected to produce 3,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen annually.
  • The facility will help reduce CO2 emissions by around 22,000 tonnes once operational.
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has taken a step towards supporting the decarbonisation of fertiliser production in Uzbekistan by financing a pilot hydrogen generation facility. The EBRD has offered up to $65m to ACWA Power UKS Green H2 for the development, design, construction, and operation of the facility. This financial package includes a $55m loan from the EBRD and concessional finance of up to $10m from Canada. The primary objective of this facility is to replace grey hydrogen currently used in ammonia fertiliser production in Uzbekistan. Once operational, the plant is projected to produce up to 3,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen annually, contributing to a reduction of around 22,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions. The initiative signifies a major step towards sustainable and eco-friendly practices in the region, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change and promote renewable energy sources.
