On May 21, 2024, the Council of the EU formally adopted the Hydrogen and Decarbonized Gas Market Package, which includes the 'H2 Directive' and 'H2 Regulation'. The Package is designed to foster the decarbonization of the gas market by promoting renewable and low-carbon gases, with a specific focus on hydrogen. It aims to replace fossil-based natural gas with sustainable alternatives and gradually phase out unabated natural gas by 2050. The Package also sets rules for hydrogen networks, ensuring non-discriminatory access and connection. Importantly, it defines low-carbon hydrogen and aligns gas quality standards with the EU Renewable Energy Directives, allowing low-carbon gases to play a role in sectors like sustainable aviation fuel. By adopting this Package, the EU is taking significant steps towards a more sustainable and climate-friendly energy future.
