Evonik and VoltH2 Partner to Produce Green Hydrogen in the Netherlands
Key Ideas
  • Evonik and VoltH2 will collaborate to build a 50MW electrolyser in Delfzijl to supply Evonik's chemical park with green hydrogen by 2027.
  • The electrolyser unit aims to replace fossil-based hydrogen in Evonik's processes, particularly in the production of hydrogen peroxide.
  • This partnership demonstrates a commitment to transitioning production processes to renewable resources and achieving significant carbon emission reductions.
  • VoltH2's development in Delfzijl is seen as crucial for future green hydrogen projects in the region and showcases the potential of sustainable electricity and hydrogen production.
German firm Evonik has signed a term sheet with VoltH2 to construct a 50MW electrolyser in Delfzijl, Netherlands, to provide green hydrogen to Evonik's chemical park starting from 2027. The electrolyser will be used to partially replace the use of fossil-based hydrogen in Evonik's manufacturing processes, particularly in the production of hydrogen peroxide, which is utilized as a bleaching agent and disinfectant. Evonik Peroxide Netherlands Managing Director, Peter Metten, highlighted the company's aim to transition to entirely renewable resources, with sourcing green hydrogen being the key challenge. VoltH2, working on multiple Dutch green hydrogen projects, stated that the Delfzijl development will be pivotal for upcoming initiatives. The partnership between Evonik and VoltH2 illustrates a strategic move towards more sustainable practices, showcasing the feasibility of significant carbon emission reductions through the utilization of green hydrogen. Founder and Managing Director of VoltH2, André Jurres, emphasized the importance of large industrial players like Evonik in optimizing the use of sustainable electricity and green hydrogen production. This collaboration sets the stage for future green hydrogen endeavors and highlights the potential of sustainable industrial development in the region.
