Key Ideas
  • The 40MWe Gowy Green Hydrogen facility in the North West of England aims to deliver hydrogen to industrial offtakers to support their decarbonization efforts and job creation.
  • Feasibility studies are complete, and design and site investigation works are underway, with operational readiness potentially by 2028.
  • SSE and EET Hydrogen are collaborating to develop the facility, aligning with the UK's target to deliver 10GW of low-carbon hydrogen by 2030.
  • The project signifies a commitment to scaling up green hydrogen production to enable hard-to-abate industries to decarbonize and contribute to the clean power system.
Essar Energy Transition (EET) Hydrogen and UK’s leading clean energy company SSE have initiated the development of the Gowy Green Hydrogen facility in the North West of England. This 40MWe facility, named after the River Gowy and nearby nature reserve, is set to provide hydrogen to industrial offtakers in the region to aid in their decarbonization efforts. The project, expected to be operational by 2028, marks a significant step towards supporting job growth and transitioning industries towards low-carbon practices. CEO Joe Seifert expressed EET Hydrogen's commitment to becoming a prominent low-carbon hydrogen business in the UK, highlighting Gowy Green as a valuable addition to their ongoing projects. The partnership with SSE underscores the region's leadership in decarbonizing industry and power through low-carbon hydrogen solutions. Hannah Bronwin, SSE Thermal's Director of Business Development, emphasized the necessity of scaling up green hydrogen production to address hard-to-abate industries' decarbonization challenges and enhance clean power generation. The collaboration between EET Hydrogen and SSE aligns with the UK's strategic goal of achieving 10GW of low-carbon hydrogen by 2030, crucial for fostering a sustainable power system and facilitating industrial decarbonization. SSE's comprehensive approach encompasses projects throughout the hydrogen value chain, focusing on green and blue hydrogen production, storage, and power generation. With a strong national emphasis on low-carbon hydrogen, the UK is positioned to leverage this technology for a cleaner energy future and to support sectors struggling to reduce emissions.
