Green Industrial Revolution: Hydrogen Cluster Development in Sweden
Key Ideas
  • Lhyfe, OX2, and Velarion collaborate to establish a hydrogen-based industrial cluster in Ånge, Sweden, combining wind power with green hydrogen production.
  • The project will feature a wind farm with an annual capacity of 1.4TWh powering a green hydrogen production unit capable of producing up to 100 tonnes of green hydrogen per day.
  • Velarion will construct a carbon-neutral fertilizer plant within the cluster, utilizing green hydrogen to produce green ammonia and reduce carbon emissions in fertilizer production.
  • The project aims to enhance local sustainability, attract further industrial investments, and build a green ecosystem contributing to the region's economy and job creation.
Hydrogen production specialist Lhyfe, onshore wind developer OX2, and green fertilizer producer Velarion have partnered to establish a hydrogen-based industrial cluster in Ånge municipality, Sweden. The project, located in Grönsta near Torpshammar, will integrate wind power with large-scale green hydrogen production to create carbon-negative neutral products. OX2 is developing a wind farm in Marktjärn, Torpshammar, with an annual production capacity of 1.4TWh. This renewable electricity will fuel Lhyfe's hydrogen production unit in Torpshammar, capable of generating up to 100 tonnes of green hydrogen daily. Additionally, Velarion will build a carbon-neutral fertilizer plant in the cluster, using green hydrogen to produce green ammonia and reduce carbon emissions in fertilizer production. The project, currently in the conceptual phase, is pending the outcome of studies, operating licenses, environmental permits, and financial decisions. Anders Nilsson from OX2 expressed enthusiasm for the project's potential in promoting sustainable local industry and attracting further industrial developments in Ånge. Sara Wihlborg of Lhyfe highlighted the project's significant production capacity, fostering collaborations to refine hydrogen and by-products and build a local green ecosystem to boost the region's economy and employment opportunities.
