Haffner Energy Signs First Contract for Biomass-Based Hydrogen Production
Key Ideas
  • Haffner Energy has successfully started the production of mobility-grade green hydrogen at its Marolles site in France, marking a significant step forward in the development of sustainable energy solutions.
  • The signing of the first contract with H2 bois SA paves the way for the construction of a biomass-based hydrogen production plant at the Glovelier site in Switzerland, expected to be operational by July 2026.
  • The plant is set to produce 30 kg/h of hydrogen, along with electricity and biochar from biomass, contributing to decarbonizing mobility and meeting the energy needs of local industrial consumers.
  • The project not only demonstrates the efficacy of Haffner Energy's Hynoca® technological process but also highlights the potential for growth in the green hydrogen market, signaling a positive shift towards sustainable energy practices.
Haffner Energy has reached a significant milestone with the successful start of production of mobility-grade green hydrogen at its Marolles site in France. This achievement has led to the signing of a crucial contract with H2 bois SA, marking a decisive step towards the establishment of a 720-kg/day production plant for hydrogen, electricity, and biochar at the Glovelier site in Switzerland, slated to commence operations in July 2026. The contract signifies the beginning of a partnership to develop and operate projects for sustainable energy production from biomass, with a focus on decarbonizing mobility and meeting the energy demands of local industrial consumers. The project's total value for Haffner Energy could reach up to €8.3 million, including options, with the plant designed to produce 30 kg/h of hydrogen. The produced hydrogen will cater to industrial and mobility applications, while the electricity generated will be supplied to the grid. Additionally, biochar, a by-product of the production process, will be utilized for compost enrichment and soil enhancement, contributing to carbon sequestration. The project has already secured a land footprint and initiated the construction of a pipeline to the distribution site near the A16 motorway, ensuring convenient access for vehicles. The distribution site is strategically located in an industrial area with established consumers of fossil hydrogen, facilitating the transition to green hydrogen. The commencement of construction work signifies a concrete advancement towards realizing the vision of sustainable energy production and consumption. Philippe Haffner, the Co-founder and CEO of Haffner Energy, expressed enthusiasm over the milestone achieved, emphasizing the transformative potential of their technological processes in revolutionizing the hydrogen ecosystem. The company's dedication to producing super green hydrogen from solid biomass underscores its commitment to driving sustainable energy practices. The collaboration with H2 bois SA and other partners signifies a shift towards a greener future, with an emphasis on innovation and sustainable energy solutions.
