The Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS) has developed cutting-edge equipment to monitor the quality of hydrogen fuel supplied to vehicles at refueling stations in real-time. Hydrogen fuel, being more prone to contamination during production, transportation, and storage compared to conventional fuels, poses a significant safety risk if impurities are present. The new equipment aims to prevent accidents caused by such impurities, which can damage fuel cell catalysts, overheat systems, and lead to explosions. The sophisticated monitoring system developed by KRISS accurately measures eight regulated impurities in hydrogen fuel and sends warnings if any impurity concentration exceeds standard thresholds. This initiative not only enhances the safety of hydrogen vehicles but also improves the quality of domestically produced hydrogen. Dr. Lee Jeongsoon highlighted the reliability of the results obtained through traceable standards. The successful development of this equipment, supported by KRISS and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, is a significant step towards ensuring the safety and quality of hydrogen fuel in Korea. The project's transfer to domestic companies after a successful demonstration at a hydrogen bus refueling station in Chungju City marks a promising advancement in hydrogen fuel technology and infrastructure.
