Major Investment in Renewable Aviation Fuel in Great Falls, Montana
Key Ideas
  • Montana Renewables LLC secured a $1.44 billion loan guarantee from the US Department of Energy to fund the MaxSAF expansion at a renewable fuels plant in Great Falls.
  • The expansion project will significantly increase sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production and involve various enhancements like renewable hydrogen production and cogeneration for renewable electricity and steam.
  • MRL expects the project to boost regional development and catalyze a large-scale SAF industry, similar to the Minnesota SAF Hub, benefiting from local feedstock sourcing and creating job opportunities.
  • The Minnesota SAF Hub, supported by various entities including Bank of America and Delta Air Lines, aims to scale production of SAF for air travel, create jobs, and build a sustainable market for regenerative agricultural practices.
Montana Renewables LLC (MRL), a subsidiary of Calumet Inc., has closed on a $1.44 billion loan guarantee from the US Department of Energy to fund the MaxSAF expansion at its renewable fuels manufacturing plant in Great Falls, Montana. The first $782 million tranche of the loan guarantee will cover eligible expenses incurred by MRL, with the remaining balance to be disbursed through a revolving credit facility during the project's construction phase until completion in 2028. The MaxSAF expansion aims to increase sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production by over 700% to approximately 300 million gallons per year, enhancing the site's combined SAF-renewable diesel production capacity to 330 million gallons per year. The project includes adding a second renewable fuels reactor, debottlenecking existing units, installing SAF blending assets, increasing renewable hydrogen production, and more. MRL anticipates the expansion will drive regional development and establish a large-scale SAF industry in the area through partnerships with local stakeholders. Additionally, the Minnesota SAF Hub, supported by key players like Bank of America and Delta Air Lines, seeks to scale SAF production, create jobs, and promote regenerative agricultural practices for sustainable aviation fuel.
