Major Milestone in Green Hydrogen Production in Germany
Key Ideas
- Accelera by Cummins to supply a 100-MW PEM electrolyzer system for bp's Lingen green-hydrogen project in Germany, the largest hydrogen production plant for bp to date.
- The system will consist of 20 PEM HyLYZER-1000 electrolyzer units and is set to produce 11,000 tons of green hydrogen per year once fully operational in 2027.
- This project signifies a significant step in the energy transition in Germany and Europe, showcasing the ability to deliver industrial-scale solutions for decarbonization and green hydrogen production.
- The initiative by bp will not only decarbonize operations but also bring regional economic benefits and support sustainability goals, contributing to the growth of the green hydrogen economy.
In a significant development for green hydrogen production, Accelera by Cummins is set to supply a 100-megawatt proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer system for bp's Lingen green-hydrogen project in Germany. This project, bp's largest hydrogen production plant so far, will be powered by Accelera's advanced HyLYZER PEM electrolyzer technology. The system will be comprised of 20 PEM HyLYZER-1000 electrolyzer units, making it the largest system assembled by Accelera to date. These units are being manufactured in Accelera's new electrolyzer plant in Guadalajara, Spain, with expected full commissioning by 2027 to produce 11,000 tons of green hydrogen annually.
Andreas Lippert, Vice President and General Manager of Electrolyzers for Accelera, emphasized the significance of this project in advancing the energy transition in Germany and Europe. This collaboration with bp highlights Accelera's capability to provide innovative, industrial-scale solutions for decarbonization and the growth of the green hydrogen economy. Felipe Arbelaez, Senior Vice President for Hydrogen and Carbon Capture & Storage at bp, highlighted the regional benefits and sustainability contributions of the Lingen green hydrogen project, signaling a shift towards low-carbon industrial operations.
The use of electrolyzers powered by renewable energy sources is crucial in accelerating the clean energy transition. Accelera's track record of deploying over 600 electrolyzer units globally, including in Canada and the U.S., positions them as a leader in large-scale hydrogen production. This project not only marks a step towards decarbonization but also underlines the potential for green hydrogen initiatives to drive economic growth and sustainability goals on a regional scale.
