Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL) has announced the initiation of a 500 tpa green hydrogen production unit within its refinery premises in Mangalore, India. The green hydrogen produced will be blended with the existing hydrogen for captive use, in line with India's Green Hydrogen Policy that emphasizes electrolysis of water using renewable energy. MRPL's collaboration with CSIR-National Chemical Laboratory (CSIR-NCL) has also led to the development of Iso ButyI Benzene (IBB) process technology, for which the company has obtained a patent. Additionally, MRPL is in the process of setting up a marketing terminal in Bengaluru to cater to petroleum product requirements primarily in Karnataka. The annual report highlights MRPL's focus on opportunities in the petrochemical sector, with plans to revisit its business model, asset base, and technology options. The company aims to enhance asset utilization by integrating into chemicals, renewable fuels, and other emerging areas, with a specific focus on petrochemical growth in the medium term. MRPL also procured 16.76 million tonnes of crude oil in 2023-24 from various national oil companies and open market sources, processing new crudes like Siberian Light from Russia and others.
