  • Kathmandu University has been researching green hydrogen fuel for two years, achieving their first production on April 2, 2023.
  • The Nepal Oil Corporation provided financial support, and technical assistance was received from a Korean company for the establishment of the hydrogen refueling center on the university campus.
  • The hydrogen-fueled car imported from South Korea can travel up to 650 kilometers on a full tank and aims to pave the way for hydrogen-powered transport in Nepal.
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli of Nepal inaugurated the Green Hydrogen Production and Refueling Center at Kathmandu University during the 29th Convocation Ceremony. The event also saw the unveiling of a hydrogen-fueled car, symbolizing a step towards sustainable transportation. PM Oli commended the university's effort and stressed the need for similar projects in other locations, especially focusing on hydrogen-powered vehicles. Kathmandu University, under the leadership of Associate Professor Biraj Singh Thapa, has been researching green hydrogen for two years, with the support of Nepal Oil Corporation and a Korean company for technical guidance. The hydrogen production process involves water electrolysis, purification, storage, and transfer to the car's fuel tank. The center, funded by NOC and the university, produces two kilograms of hydrogen daily for research. The imported car from Hyundai can store up to six kilograms of hydrogen, enabling a range of 650 kilometers. KU plans to pioneer Nepal's hydrogen transport by establishing a pilot refueling center capable of serving 30-35 hydrogen-fueled vehicles.
