The Netherlands and Curaçao have embarked on a collaborative effort to explore the vast potential of wind energy and green hydrogen production in Curaçao for transitioning to a sustainable energy economy. Studies by TNO and Fugro have indicated substantial potential for large-scale green hydrogen export from the island. Through a framework agreement, both countries have committed to administrative collaboration, studies, and joint financing of approximately 10 million euros for advancing green hydrogen projects. The initiative includes plans for a demo phase utilizing offshore wind to produce green hydrogen, focusing on scalability and competitiveness on an international level. Key stakeholders in Curaçao and the Netherlands are involved in this initiative to optimize expertise and insights for local benefits and global competitiveness. The collaboration also aims to explore the strategic advantages Curaçao can gain from the hydrogen value chain and initiate communication with stakeholders for local energy applications. This partnership paves the way for leveraging Curaçao's hydrogen production potential to meet the increasing demand for green hydrogen in Europe's industrial and transport sectors, fostering a valuable win-win situation within the kingdom. Several studies are scheduled to be completed by the end of 2024 to further progress these green energy initiatives.
