Neuman & Esser to Supply Key Equipment for Major Hydrogen Storage Project in Northern Germany
Key Ideas
  • Neuman & Esser will provide two horizontal piston compressors for EWE's 'Clean Hydrogen Coastline' project in Germany.
  • The project aims to convert an existing natural gas cavern into a large-scale hydrogen storage facility and is part of a broader initiative for hydrogen production and use.
  • Government support through the IPCEI program is crucial for the project's development, and EWE plans to start hydrogen storage by 2027.
  • EWE and Neuman & Esser see this as a significant step towards a sustainable and flexible hydrogen supply network in Germany.
Neuman & Esser has secured a contract to supply two horizontal piston compressors to German energy company EWE for a key hydrogen storage project in Northern Germany. The compressors, part of EWE's 'Clean Hydrogen Coastline' initiative, will be used in converting an underground natural gas cavern in Huntorf, Lower Saxony, into a large-scale hydrogen storage facility. This project, scheduled to start storing hydrogen by 2027, aligns with European energy transition goals by integrating hydrogen production, storage, transportation, and use. Government support through the IPCEI program in 2024 has been instrumental in advancing the project, which is currently in the detailed planning phase. Neuman & Esser's compressors will facilitate the safe and efficient transfer of hydrogen, building on EWE's successful pilot project near Berlin. The collaboration between the two companies aims to establish a network of large-scale hydrogen storage caverns to ensure a flexible and reliable hydrogen supply. Both parties view this project as a crucial step in incorporating green hydrogen into the existing infrastructure and promoting a sustainable hydrogen economy.
