Collaborating to design a standardized concept for solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) manufacturing, the trio plans to build a new factory in Virginia, USA. The aim is to enhance safety measures and reduce manufacturing costs for SOECs. This partnership comes amid a rapidly expanding market for green hydrogen, with projections indicating an annual production of 38 million tonnes by 2030, predominantly from renewable energy electrolysers. The innovative SOECs, operating at high temperatures, efficiently convert electrical energy into chemical energy by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen. Moreover, when powered by electricity from renewables, they can generate green hydrogen. Additionally, SOECs have the capability of co-electrolysis, simultaneously converting water and carbon dioxide into syngas, facilitating the production of synthetic fuels like e-fuels. Topsoe, already constructing an SOEC factory in Denmark, aims to establish a 'standardized concept' for the future Virginia plant, expected to commence operations in 2028.
