Norway-Netherlands Hydrogen Transport Corridor for Steel Production
Key Ideas
  • Norway and the Netherlands have agreed on a hydrogen and CO2 transport corridor for Tata Steel Nederland.
  • Gen2 Energy will produce green hydrogen using hydropower, to be transported by ECOLOG's ships to Amsterdam.
  • Tata Steel Nederland will utilize the hydrogen as fuel and deploy carbon capture to achieve carbon-neutral steel production.
  • The agreement includes the transport of CO2 from the Netherlands to Norway for permanent storage in the proposed Gismarvik carbon storage hub.
Norway and the Netherlands have signed an agreement to establish a transport corridor for hydrogen and CO2 intended for Tata Steel Nederland. In this collaboration, Norwegian company Gen2 Energy will produce green hydrogen using hydropower and partner with ECOLOG to transport it via ships to the Port of Amsterdam. Tata Steel Nederland will then convert the hydrogen back into a gas for use as fuel. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) will play a crucial role in this partnership, enabling Tata Steel to produce carbon-neutral steel. Additionally, Tata Steel has signed agreements with Horisont Energi and ECOLOG to facilitate the deployment of CCS technology. The plan involves transporting CO2 from the Netherlands to Norway for permanent storage in the Gismarvik carbon storage hub. This initiative has garnered the royal seal of approval from King Willen-Alexander of the Netherlands, who visited Norway to explore hydrogen production and carbon capture sites. The partnership aims to advance decarbonization efforts and promote sustainable practices between the two countries.
