Romanian energy company OMV Petrom has announced an investment of €750M in its Petrobrazi refinery to become the first major sustainable fuels producer in southeast Europe. The plans involve establishing facilities for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), and green hydrogen for biofuels production. These initiatives aim to supply 250,000 tonnes of sustainable fuels starting in 2028, contributing to decarbonizing transport in Romania. The company's CEO, Christina Verchere, highlighted their €11bn commitment to transforming towards a lower carbon future by 2030. The SAF/HVO facility will have a production capacity of 250,000 tonnes/year and will produce by-products like bio-naphtha and bio-LPG for the chemical industry. With green hydrogen production units supplying most of the hydrogen needs, the refinery in Ploiesti is set to lead in sustainable fuel production. Additionally, OMV Petrom has acquired a 50% stake in a Romanian used cooking oil collector to ensure a raw material supply for biofuels. The company's ambitious investments aim to replace imports with locally produced biofuels, showcasing a strong commitment to sustainability and energy transition. OMV Petrom is a key player in southeastern Europe's energy sector with significant refining capacity and a presence in the oil products retail market.
