Philippine DOE Awaits Presidential Approval for Hydrogen Resource Development Winners
Key Ideas
- The Department of Energy in the Philippines is awaiting presidential approval for the winners of the bidding for the development of pre-determined hydrogen resource areas.
- Five applications were received for service contracts for hydrogen exploration in Zambales, with all passing completeness checks and eligible for further evaluation.
- The promotion of investments in utilizing hydrogen for energy production is a key focus, with potential applications such as co-firing hydrogen with natural gas for cleaner combustion.
The Department of Energy (DOE) in the Philippines is on the brink of announcing the winners of the bidding for the development of hydrogen resource areas in the country. Secretary Raphael Lotilla mentioned at the Pilipinas Conference 2024 in Makati City that the agency is awaiting official notification from the Office of the President (OP) before making the announcement. The DOE had received five applications for service contracts for hydrogen exploration in Zambales under the 2024 Philippine Bid Round, all of which passed the completeness check and are now under further evaluation. The top applicants have been endorsed to the OP for approval. Earlier this year, the DOE issued a circular aimed at promoting investments in utilizing hydrogen for energy production in the country. One potential use of hydrogen in the energy sector is its ability to be co-fired with natural gas to enhance the latter's combustion efficiency. This development signifies a positive step towards harnessing hydrogen resources for cleaner energy production in the Philippines.
