Key Ideas
  • Nel Hydrogen Electrolyser AS, a subsidiary of Nel ASA, signed a €5 million contract with Samsung C&T Corporation for 10 MW of alkaline electrolyser equipment.
  • The project aims to produce hydrogen from excess nuclear power generation to increase overall energy efficiency.
  • Samsung C&T expresses confidence in Nel's technology for the project and hopes to strengthen their partnership in clean hydrogen business.
  • The electrodes for the project will be produced in the world's first fully automated electrolyser production line in Norway.
Nel Hydrogen Electrolyser AS, a subsidiary of Nel ASA, has signed a new contract with Samsung C&T Corporation for 10 MW of alkaline electrolyser equipment, valued at about EUR 5 million. This equipment is intended for Samsung C&T's first pilot for a nuclear-connected hydrogen production plant, known as 'pink hydrogen.' The project's goal is to utilize excess nuclear power generation to produce hydrogen, thereby increasing overall energy efficiency by preventing waste during periods of oversupply. Samsung C&T, a company focusing on global engineering, procurement, and construction, has previously signed agreements related to green hydrogen and is expanding its energy transition business portfolio. Byung Soo Lee, Samsung C&T's head of Energy Solution Business Unit, expressed confidence in Nel's technology for the project, highlighting the significance of this partnership in the clean hydrogen sector. The partnership between Nel ASA and Samsung C&T marks a significant step in the development of a hydrogen production project using nuclear power in Korea. The project involves the purchase of alkaline stacks and balance-of-stacks (BoS) from Nel, with the electrodes set to be produced in Norway. The production will take place at the Herøya facility, known as the world's first fully automated electrolyser production line. Overall, this collaboration signifies a positive advancement in clean energy technology, demonstrating the potential for hydrogen production using nuclear power and fostering a sustainable energy transition.
