The Net Zero Technology Centre (NZTC) and Cruh21 have jointly released a report focusing on green hydrogen collaboration between Scotland and Germany. The report, titled 'Enabling Green Hydrogen Exports: Matching Scottish Production to German Demand,' evaluates the potential for hydrogen production in Scotland to meet the demand in Germany. It presents various scenarios for matching hydrogen export and consumption, highlighting the technological, infrastructural, and regulatory requirements for the safe distribution of hydrogen. According to the report, Scottish hydrogen exports could potentially address a significant portion of Germany's hydrogen import requirements by 2045, with estimates ranging from 22% to 100%. The report outlines a two-stage strategy, with the first stage targeting early production activities before the installation of hydrogen pipelines to export 35 TWh of hydrogen by 2030. The second stage, spanning from 2030 to 2045, focuses on scaling up infrastructure for the low-cost export of 94TWh of hydrogen. Additionally, the report identifies priorities for research, necessary infrastructure investments, energy partnerships, and the importance of aligning export targets with evolving demand patterns. The overall emphasis is on establishing a robust distribution network to facilitate the safe and efficient export of hydrogen to meet Germany's increasing demand for sustainable energy sources.
