Serbian Utility EPS Explores Green Hydrogen for Energy Production
Key Ideas
- EPS is considering the production and use of green hydrogen, including as a renewable fuel alternative for coal-fired power plants.
- The analysis will determine possible locations, size, and method of hydrogen production, aiming to reduce fossil fuel usage and optimize the company's power balance.
- Thermal power plants like TENT A, Kostolac A, TE-TO Novi Sad, and TE-TO Zrenjanin are identified as ideal locations for green hydrogen production.
- The integration of renewable energy sources will increase the role of thermal power plants in providing flexibility and transitioning to more sustainable energy practices.
Elektroprivreda Srbije (EPS) in Serbia is exploring the potential of green hydrogen as an alternative fuel for its coal-fired power plants. Through an analysis initiated by EPS CEO Dušan Živković, the utility aims to assess the feasibility and benefits of hydrogen production and usage. The analysis, conducted at the 2nd Belgrade International Conference on Hydrogen, will focus on determining suitable locations, storage options, and integration methods for hydrogen-based fuel. EPS's Head of Ancillary Services, Aleksandar Latinović, highlighted the ideal conditions for green hydrogen production at thermal power plants like TENT A, Kostolac A, TE-TO Novi Sad, and TE-TO Zrenjanin. By considering hydrogen as a replacement for backup fuels like fuel oil, EPS aims to enhance energy production sustainability. Latinović emphasized that the thermal sector, particularly thermal power plants, will play a crucial role in the future power industry, offering flexibility and supporting the integration of renewables. The analysis will further explore the economic, environmental, and energy independence aspects of using hydrogen on-site, highlighting the potential benefits for the power sector.
