Sparc Hydrogen has initiated the construction of a pioneering pilot plant in South Australia to produce green hydrogen using its innovative photocatalytic water splitting (PWS) process. Under the management of Incitias Pty, the plant is being built at the University of Adelaide's Roseworthy Campus after receiving approval from the Light Regional Council. Sparc Hydrogen also obtained its first patent for the licensed PWS reactor technology in early 2025. The pilot plant, slated for launch in mid-2025, aims to test various reactor designs and photocatalyst materials under concentrated solar conditions in a bid to advance the hydrogen production technology. The technology developed by Sparc Hydrogen eliminates the need for costly renewable electricity sources like solar or wind farms, as well as expensive electrolysers, by utilizing photocatalyst materials and sunlight directly to produce green hydrogen from water.
