The Road Ahead: Public Transport Embracing Hydrogen Innovation
Key Ideas
  • Public transport operators in the UK, Germany, and Italy are increasingly looking towards hydrogen as a sustainable solution, with strong industry support.
  • Decentralised hydrogen production and localised electrolysers are highlighted as key strategies to overcome infrastructure challenges.
  • Safety concerns around hydrogen storage remain a significant barrier, with technical expertise and fuelling infrastructure gaps needing to be addressed for successful adoption.
  • The report emphasizes the importance of proving the viability and scalability of hydrogen as a solution for decarbonising transport, especially in the face of funding constraints.
Commissioned by IMI, The Road Ahead report surveyed 300 senior public transport professionals in the UK, Germany, and Italy, focusing on hydrogen adoption. Despite grid capacity concerns, 89% believe hydrogen is crucial for overcoming battery-powered fleet limitations. 21% already have hydrogen vehicles, with 61% planning investments in the next two years. Nearly three-quarters aim to expand their hydrogen fleets in the next decade. Decentralised hydrogen production, localised electrolysers, and decentralized infrastructure are seen as critical to address challenges. Safety concerns are highlighted, with UK, Italy, and Germany respondents citing storage issues. Technical expertise gaps and fuelling infrastructure challenges must be tackled for successful adoption. Return on investment is stressed, especially in the public sector facing funding constraints. The report underscores the need to prove hydrogen's viability and scalability for decarbonising transport.
