A UK industrial consortium named HySpeed has revealed plans to invest £6.5 billion in a significant clean hydrogen mega-project that is expected to generate around 24,000 job opportunities. The consortium involves various UK firms, including Centrica, National Gas, and ITM Power, aiming to drive further private investment and contribute up to £2 billion yearly to the UK economy. The project plans to reduce up to one million tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. Led by HydraB Power Group, HySpeed seeks to expand electrolytic hydrogen production, lower costs, and advance the UK's renewable energy goals. The initiative intends to establish a strong hydrogen ecosystem with strategically located production hubs. Additionally, the project aims to produce hydrogen for blending into the UK gas grid to facilitate broad industrial decarbonization. This initiative aligns with the UK government's push for hydrogen investment, following the announcement of the second hydrogen allocation round (HAR2) shortlist. The project's scale and ambition are seen as crucial in driving down costs, making hydrogen deployment affordable for both the government and private sector. It also highlights the importance of hydrogen in decarbonizing hard-to-abate sectors. The HySpeed project, underpinned by a consortium approach, is viewed as a significant step towards rapidly expanding the UK's green hydrogen economy. While specific locations for hydrogen production investments were not disclosed, various regions in the UK are emerging as hydrogen hubs, particularly former industrial areas in the north west of England, south Wales, and central Scotland, indicating a promising future for hydrogen technologies.
