The Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority is set to make significant strides towards a greener future with the Environmental Protection Agency allocating more than $21.9 million in funding. This move aims to cut pollution from port equipment and enhance environmental sustainability. Mark Schrupp, the executive director, expressed enthusiasm for the addition of six battery-operated forklift trucks as part of the initiative. The investment will cover the acquisition of various electric equipment like forklifts, cranes, rail car movers, charging stations, and solar panels. This funding will play a crucial role in helping the port achieve its target of net-zero carbon emissions by 2040 while simultaneously improving the air quality in Southwest Detroit, an area known for poor air quality in Michigan. Moreover, a $3 million grant will aid in planning the transition to hydrogen and green methanol, training workers, and exploring the use of a zero-emission fuel cell barge for docked ships. Although electric equipment is currently favored, the plan includes a potential shift towards heavier-duty hydrogen-powered fuel cell equipment in the long run. Community engagement and worker training will be spearheaded by Southwest Detroit Environmental Vision, supported by organizations like Michigan Clean Cities and NextEnergy to promote the adoption of zero-emission technologies.
