- The simulation suite includes virtual reality elements and cloud-based solutions for blended learning, enabling remote use by trainees.
- Studies emphasize the importance of training on new fuels like ammonia, hydrogen, and methanol, with a call for a global education overhaul in the maritime industry.
- The focus on upskilling seafarers in sustainable technology aims to prepare them for the decarbonized future of shipping and the operation of technologically advanced vessels.
Maritime technology company Wärtsilä has provided its dual-fuel simulator technology to the Wavelink Maritime Institute (WMI) in Singapore to enhance the skills of seafarers in utilizing sustainable fuels. The simulator suite at WMI incorporates a 270-degree full mission bridge, a part-task bridge, and replica engine rooms, complemented by virtual reality elements. Kiran Kumar from Wärtsilä Marine highlighted the importance of training in fuel efficiency and the role of alternative fuels in reducing emissions. The simulation suite, coupled with virtual reality and cloud-based solutions, offers realistic training experiences and remote access for trainees.
The maritime industry's shift towards sustainable technology has prompted the need for upskilling seafarers to operate modern vessels efficiently. A study by DNV and the Singapore Maritime Foundation revealed that the majority of seafarers recognize the necessity for training in new and emerging fuels, including ammonia, hydrogen, and methanol. Moreover, the International Transport Workers' Federation and the World Maritime University advocate for an educational revamp to meet the demands of sustainable ship operations.
Teo Keong Kok, the managing director at WMI, underlined the importance of continuous reskilling and upskilling for seafarers, especially in decarbonization and alternative fuels. The advanced simulator technology from Wärtsilä enables WMI to deliver high-quality maritime training, aligning students with the industry's transition towards sustainable practices and advanced vessel operations.
