Lloyd’s Register has granted approval in principle (AiP) to CMB.TECH and Damen for a groundbreaking hydrogen solution to be implemented on four new Damen ASD tugs. The dual-fuel hydrogen ASD Tugs 2812 FF-H2, equipped with 80-tonnes bollard pull, meet stringent IMO Tier III and EU Stage V standards. These vessels are designed to minimize NOx and CO2 emissions through four highspeed dual fuel hydrogen engines and modular storage systems for compressed hydrogen. Each tug is capable of carrying up to 16 hydrogen bottles, storing a total of 736kg of pressurized hydrogen at 350 bar. While the tugs will primarily operate on hydrogen, they have the flexibility to switch to traditional fuel when necessary and can run on 100% traditional fuel if needed. Damen and CMB.TECH have a history of collaboration and are committed to advancing the maritime energy transition. The companies have previously worked on hydrogen-powered vessels and are now pioneering the use of hydrogen in ASD tugs to decarbonize port operations. The AiP ceremony, held at Albwardy Damen in Sharjah during the 27th International Tug & Salvage Convention in Dubai, marked a significant milestone in green energy innovation and commitment to sustainability. The development of hydrogen-powered tugs signifies a crucial move towards reducing carbon emissions and promoting the production of green hydrogen worldwide.
