Innovative Method to Produce Hydrogen from Methanol and Paraformaldehyde for Sustainable Energy Solutions
Key Ideas
  • Researchers at IISER Tirupati developed a synthetic method using methanol and paraformaldehyde to generate hydrogen, showcasing efficiency in hydrogenation of alkynes.
  • The use of commercially available nickel catalysts without the need for bases or activators makes the process more sustainable and economically viable.
  • The research, supported by ANRF, offers a promising approach towards COx-free hydrogen generation, contributing to the 'Hydrogen economy' and sustainable energy solutions.
A team led by Prof. Ekambaram Balaraman at IISER Tirupati has devised an innovative method to produce hydrogen gas from a mixture of methanol and paraformaldehyde under mild conditions. This approach has shown significant effectiveness in the transfer hydrogenation of alkynes to alkenes and could serve as a promising hydrogen carrier. With the depletion of fossil fuels driving the search for alternative energy sources, hydrogen generation plays a crucial role in energy storage, transportation, and various chemical processes. Methanol and paraformaldehyde, widely produced chemicals, have emerged as potential hydrogen carriers due to their abundance and ease of manufacture, offering advantages over free hydrogen. The research utilized nickel catalysts to generate hydrogen from methanol and paraformaldehyde without the need for additional agents, showcasing high efficiency in chemo- and stereo-selective hydrogenation reactions. The successful application of the generated hydrogen in synthesizing bioactive molecules with enhanced value highlights the versatility of this method. The study, accepted for publication in Catalysis Science & Technology, not only opens a new avenue for COx-free hydrogen production but also contributes to the advancement of a 'Hydrogen economy.' By harnessing methanol and paraformaldehyde as hydrogen carriers, this research addresses the challenges posed by global energy demands and marks a significant step towards sustainable energy solutions.
