South & City College Birmingham (SCCB) has inaugurated a new training facility funded by a £1.5m grant to address the increasing demand for hydrogen-fuelled vehicles in the automotive industry. The workshop, established in partnership with Enginius and Faun Zoeller, specializes in training engineers on hydrogen light vehicles, PSVs, and HGVs, with the inclusion of a Bluepower e-base refuse collection vehicle for practical training. The 450m2 ATEX-compliant workshop at SCCB meets industry standards with safety systems and vehicle lifts, benefiting students at all levels of automotive courses. The focus is on upskilling the current workforce, supporting higher education students, and creating pathways for entry-level learners to progress. The facility offers the IMI Level 1 hydrogen awareness qualification and plans for a Level 4 course on diagnosing faults on live hydrogen vehicles. Moreover, SCCB aims to use the workshop for research and development and emphasizes preparing the automotive sector for the transition to alternative fuel vehicles, including hydrogen, aligning with the government's plans to phase out petrol and diesel vehicles.
