NSW Approves $207.6 Million Hydrogen Hub for Clean Energy Future
Key Ideas
  • NSW Government has granted planning approval for a $207.6 million hydrogen hub in the Hunter, marking a significant move for the state's renewables sector.
  • The hub, led by Origin Future Fuels, will provide green hydrogen to decarbonize operations at Orica's manufacturing facility and support the transport sector.
  • The project is expected to create 160 construction jobs and 10 ongoing roles, with funding from both NSW and Commonwealth government departments.
  • Green hydrogen production at the facility will help in reducing over 52,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions annually and contribute to Australia's net zero transformation.
The NSW Government has recently approved a $207.6 million hydrogen hub project in the Hunter region, signaling a significant step towards clean energy initiatives in the state. Minister for Climate Change and the Environment Penny Sharpe highlighted the importance of this facility in accelerating NSW's transition to clean technologies and achieving net zero emissions. The hub, to be developed by Origin Future Fuels at Kooragang Island, is set to commence construction in mid-2025. It aims to deliver 55 megawatts of electrolyser capacity by 2026, scaling up to over 1 gigawatt within the next decade. One of the main beneficiaries of the green hydrogen produced will be Orica's nearby manufacturing plant, aiding in the decarbonization of its operations. Additionally, the facility will cater to transport customers through refuelling stations. This development, funded by both NSW and Commonwealth departments, is projected to create job opportunities with 160 construction roles and 10 ongoing positions. The green hydrogen produced at the hub will not only help in reducing greenhouse gas emissions by over 52,000 tonnes annually but also support Australia's net zero goals. Federal Member for Newcastle Sharon Claydon praised the project's importance in the country's transition to cleaner energy sources and acknowledged the support from the government in promoting renewable energy and job growth in the region.
