TotalEnergies and Air Products Strike Green Deal to Decarbonize European Refineries
Key Ideas
  • TotalEnergies and Air Products agree on a 15-year deal for the supply of 70,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually to TotalEnergies' Northern European refineries starting from 2030.
  • The agreement aims to reduce approximately 700,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year by delivering green hydrogen directly to the refineries.
  • A memorandum of understanding has been signed for the supply of renewable power, starting with a Power Purchase Agreement for 150MW of solar power from a Texas project, with plans to expand to the UK, Poland, and France.
  • TotalEnergies and Air Products showcase commitment to pioneering the energy transition and green hydrogen industry, as TotalEnergies also becomes a supplier of green power to Air Products for their decarbonisation roadmap.
TotalEnergies and Air Products have inked a significant deal focusing on decarbonizing European refineries. The 15-year agreement will see Air Products supplying 70,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually to TotalEnergies' Northern European refineries, commencing in 2030. This move aligns with TotalEnergies' initiative to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by sourcing 500,000 tonnes per year of green hydrogen following a tender call in 2023. By directly delivering green hydrogen to the refineries, the partnership aims to mitigate around 700,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year. Additionally, the two companies have outlined plans for renewable power collaboration. The initial Power Purchase Agreement involves 150MW of solar power from a Texas project, with intentions to explore further opportunities in the UK, Poland, and France. Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, expressed pride in leading the energy transition and fostering a green hydrogen industry through long-term contracts with refineries in Europe. The extension of the partnership also involves TotalEnergies supplying green power to Air Products, thereby contributing to Air Products' decarbonisation strategy. This collaboration signifies a significant step towards sustainable practices in the energy sector.
