Fincantieri and Viking have announced their joint venture to introduce the world's inaugural hydrogen-powered cruise ship, the Viking Libra, slated for a late 2026 launch. Currently being constructed at the Ancona shipyard in Italy, this 239-meter vessel is set to accommodate up to 998 guests and will rely on onboard-stored hydrogen for both propulsion and electricity generation. The innovative hydrogen propulsion system and advanced fuel cells will enable the ship to operate with zero emissions, allowing it to navigate even the most environmentally delicate areas. Pierroberto Folgiero, Fincantieri's CEO, expressed the significance of this project in shaping sustainable maritime transportation. Moreover, Viking's Chairman and CEO, Torstein Hagen, highlighted the company's dedication to eco-friendly operations through the design of the Viking Libra and the upcoming Viking Astrea. The partnership also includes plans for two additional hydrogen-powered cruise ships, aligned with the commitment to reducing environmental impact and promoting renewable energy sources in the cruise industry.
