WA Government Launches Initiative for Pilbara Clean Energy Training and Research Institute
Key Ideas
  • The WA Government is seeking applications to design the Pilbara-based Clean Energy Training and Research Institute (CETRI) as part of the $140 million Pilbara Hydrogen Hub project.
  • CETRI will focus on research, development, and training related to clean energy industries, specifically in the production, transportation, storage, and export of renewable hydrogen.
  • Premier Roger Cook highlighted the importance of developing skills for future clean energy jobs, positioning Western Australia as a clean energy powerhouse and aiming to secure major job-creating projects in hydrogen, ammonia, critical minerals, and renewable energy.
  • The Pilbara Hydrogen Hub, jointly funded by the WA and Federal Governments, is expected to create nearly 1,000 direct and indirect jobs in the region, with CETRI set to become operational by mid-2028.
The Western Australian Government has initiated the development of the Pilbara-based Clean Energy Training and Research Institute (CETRI) as a crucial component of the $140 million Pilbara Hydrogen Hub project. The CETRI, a state-of-the-art training hub and research institute, will bring together various training providers and research sites in the industry, tertiary, and vocational training sectors. Its primary focus will be on research, development, and training activities related to clean energy industries, with a specific emphasis on skills required for the production, transportation, storage, and export of renewable hydrogen. Premier Roger Cook emphasized the significance of preparing for future clean energy jobs to establish Western Australia as a leading clean energy hub, enabling the state to attract major job-creating projects in hydrogen, ammonia, critical minerals, and renewable energy. The Pilbara Hydrogen Hub, a collaborative effort between the WA and Federal Governments, aims to generate around 1,000 direct and indirect job opportunities in the region, with CETRI expected to be operational by mid-2028. This initiative follows the recent announcement that Western Australia will host the nation's $70.5 million Clean Energy Skills Centre of Excellence, which, along with CETRI, will capitalize on the existing strengths of the state's TAFE network to upskill thousands of Western Australians. The tender for designing CETRI is open until 24th June, with interested parties invited to apply through the Tenders WA website.
