Canadian Pacific Kansas City Launches Hydrogen Production Stations in Calgary and Edmonton
Key Ideas
  • Canadian Pacific Kansas City has successfully launched two new hydrogen production and refuelling stations in Calgary and Edmonton.
  • The stations are part of CPKC's initiative to retrofit diesel locomotives with hydrogen fuel cells to reduce emissions.
  • CPKC's partnership with Atco EnPower has facilitated the construction and operation of these hydrogen stations.
  • With three hydrogen-powered locomotives already in service, CPKC is making strides in enhancing sustainability within the railway industry.
Canadian Pacific Kansas City, a railway company, has announced the operationalization of two hydrogen production and refuelling stations in Calgary and Edmonton. These stations are a part of CPKC's hydrogen locomotive program, aimed at retrofitting diesel locomotives with hydrogen fuel cells to enable emission-free operations. The construction and operation of these stations were made possible through CPKC's partnership with Atco EnPower, a division of Canadian Utilities Ltd. CPKC had previously disclosed plans to develop North America's first line-haul hydrogen-powered locomotive utilising fuel cells and batteries for electric traction. Hydrogen-powered locomotives are advantageous as they only emit water vapour, contributing to a cleaner environment. Currently, CPKC has three hydrogen-powered locomotives in operation. This initiative signifies a step forward in sustainable practices within the railway industry. The collaboration between CPKC and Atco EnPower highlights a commitment to environmental responsibility. The positive reception of these hydrogen stations and locomotives exemplifies a growing interest in hydrogen technology for emission reduction and sustainability in the transportation sector.
