ABB and Charbone Hydrogen Corp. Collaborate on Green Hydrogen Production Facilities in North America
Key Ideas
  • ABB and Charbone Hydrogen Corp. signed an MoU to develop 15 modular green hydrogen production facilities in North America over five years.
  • The collaboration aims to provide clean fuel for existing hydrogen users and heavy industrial processes like steelmaking, replacing grey hydrogen from fossil fuels.
  • The flagship Sorel-Tracy facility near Montreal, powered by hydro electricity, will set the blueprint for future projects, with the next one planned in the greater Detroit area.
  • Charbone's partnership with ABB signals a significant step towards decarbonizing industry and supporting the growth of green hydrogen production in the region.
ABB and Charbone Hydrogen Corp. have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate on developing up to 15 modular and scalable green hydrogen production facilities across North America in the next five years. The partnership aims to provide a clean fuel source for existing hydrogen users and heavy industrial processes such as steelmaking, transitioning from grey hydrogen produced from fossil fuels. Charbone, based in Montreal, will work with ABB as the preferred supplier for electrical substations to interconnect production facilities with local utilities. The flagship Sorel-Tracy facility near Montreal is set to be connected to the Hydro-Québec grid by 2025, using hydro electricity for green hydrogen electrolyzers. This project will serve as a model for future sites, including one in the greater Detroit area. The collaboration signifies a strong commitment to decarbonizing industry and promoting green hydrogen production in North America. Charbone's strategic partnership with ABB aims to leverage a modular and efficient approach to accelerate production and support the region's transition to a low carbon energy future.
