A team of South Korean researchers led by Dr. Jong Min Kim from KIST developed a groundbreaking mesoporous carbon catalyst to address these issues. By introducing mesopores into the carbon catalyst, they achieved efficient hydrogen peroxide production even in air supply environments with low oxygen concentrations and neutral electrolytes. The new catalyst, boron-doped carbon with mesopores of about 20 nanometers, displayed excellent catalytic activity in neutral electrolyte environments, overcoming previous limitations. This innovation allows for hydrogen peroxide production efficiencies exceeding 80% under near-commercial conditions, with concentrations surpassing medical standards. The research, supported by the Ministry of Science and ICT, was published in Advanced Materials, showcasing the significant advancement in hydrogen peroxide production technology.
