Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) recently released its 2025 Climate Mileposts report, emphasizing its dedication to sustainability. The report outlines CPKC's focus on decarbonization and the advancement of hydrogen locomotives as a key element of its sustainability strategy. CPKC President and CEO, Keith Creel, expressed their commitment to enhancing locomotive operating efficiency through real-world testing of hydrogen locomotives. The Hydrogen Locomotive Program has shown significant progress, with over 6,000 miles covered in freight service testing by the end of 2024. In early 2025, CPKC doubled the size of its hydrogen test fleet, adding three additional locomotives and an extra tender car, with plans for further expansion later in the year. Furthermore, CPKC's efforts include conducting over 1,100 fuelling events in 2024 for its B20 locomotive biofuel trial in British Columbia. This initiative, in collaboration with the rail industry, aims to validate the operational effects of using advanced renewable biofuel blends. In addition to hydrogen initiatives, CPKC is preparing to receive 100 Tier 4 diesel-electric locomotives in 2025. These locomotives are designed to reduce air pollutants, emissions, and enhance fuel economy and reliability, contributing to CPKC's overall sustainability goals.
