The city of Shanghai in China has revealed an ambitious plan to transition all buses and taxi fleets to new-energy vehicles (NEVs) by 2027. This initiative, outlined in the 'Shanghai large-scale infrastructure and equipment renewal special work plan (2024-2027),' sets a target of renewing 6,200 buses and 11,000 cabs in the city. The plan also includes provisions for the electrification of the taxi fleet, with the aim of having NEVs constitute the majority of newly added or renewed taxis. Additionally, Shanghai plans to introduce intelligent taxis and explore autonomous driving technology in suitable areas. The focus extends to city buses, requiring all new or renewed vehicles to be converted to new energy models, with an annual renewal target of around 1,550 new-energy public buses. Moreover, the plan encourages the use of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles in freight transportation and emphasizes the development of hydrogen refueling infrastructure. Shanghai's efforts align with national objectives to peak carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. This initiative is part of a broader trend in Chinese cities, including Beijing, to increase the adoption of NEVs. Sales of NEVs in China have been on the rise, with the domestic market seeing a 36.9% year-on-year expansion in July, indicating a growing preference for environmentally friendly vehicles.
